Chemical processes in the rock cycle

Activities in this section relate to the chemical processes involved in the rock cycle, e.g. crystallisation and chemical weathering.
While we are still at an early stage with this website it's probably more useful to look at the page with our complete list of experiments in alphabetical order. See the list on About this website.

We are starting with GCSE-level experiments.
.

Experiments

  • Chemicals from seawater

Students reduce the volume of seawater by boiling and obtain a mixture of different salts. Some of these salts are separated from the mixture.

  • Making a crystal garden

A colourful experiment to engage with students over a period of time whilst the crystals develop from the solution.

  • Water expands when it freezes

This demonstration shows that water expands when it freezes. It is useful for explaining how rocks can be broken up when they absorb water and then freeze.
